Hapatoni is 'the valley of artisans': fine bone, rosewood and swordfish-rostrum carvings and seed jewellery come from families who pass the craft from father to son. Many cruisers rate Tahuata's carvers the best in the Marquesas.
Practical
Approximate position: the village canopy beside the church. When a conch (pū) sounds for arriving cruise ships or tour boats, artisans gather under the canopy to display new work (2026 brief). Bonitier day boats come from Hiva Oa most days (2024). Contacts in the 2026 brief: renowned sculptor Cyril (+689 40 92 90 80) and tattoo artist Viri Bonno. Carvers' site: hapatonisculptures.wordpress.com (2019). Prices are not cheap but well below Papeete (2016). Locals also cook meals for cruisers: Lindia and Piu, +689 87 22 45 88, BYOB, bring containers for leftovers (Feb 2024). Fish to order from Tea (Robert), +689 40 92 90 96 (2019). Offer skills (engine, fridge or electrical repairs, English lessons) as well as cash; the brief encourages it.
