Hakaui Valley Fruit Trading

8° 56.7′ S · 140° 9.8′ W · approximate

The handful of families in the Hakaui hamlet sell (and often give) mangoes, avocados, pamplemousse, limes, bananas, ginger and pineapple from their gardens.

Practical

Position approx: plotted at the Daniel's Bay anchorage (Sugar Shack, Dec 2019: 08°56.71'S 140°09.85'W); the hamlet is ashore in the Hakaui valley, reached by the footpath from the left side of the beach. Kua and Teiki's house is just before the phone booth on the left (2020); the house where you pay the trail fee also hands out produce. Charlotte, who with Maurice never charged for fruit, died in 2023 (2024 report). Bring fresh baguettes from Taiohae as gifts. Kua and Teiki sometimes sell produce in Taiohae on Fridays from a red panga with a yellow rail (2019). They have been reachable on VHF 72 at 8am via the Taiohae net (2018). Never pick fruit yourself.
