Hakahau Cross Hike

9° 21.5′ S · 140° 2.5′ W · approximate

An easy 20-30 minute walk up to the crucifix on the ridge east of the harbour. It gives the classic view down over the anchorage and the spires, and keen hikers can carry on over the ridges and drop back into town.

Practical

Coordinate approximate: on the ridge between Hakahau Bay and Anahoa Bay, estimated from Moon Rebel's 'east side of the bay' and OpenStreetMap's headland names. Route (Sugar Shack, 2019): from the dock, take the very first road to the left (towards the Pukuee pension) and follow the well-marked trail to the cross, about 20 minutes. For a loop of about 3-3.5 miles (1-1.5 hours), continue along the narrow but clear ridge path. Before the large rock peak, in a valley, the path forks in a 'Y': go right and down, and it drops you behind the village. The overlook also shows the submerged outfall in the middle of the anchorage. Noonsite also recommends 'the hike to the next bay up the hill to the left of the harbor', the same ridge route seen from the anchorage.
