Hakaehu Bay (Pua, Nuku Hiva)

8° 47.2′ S · 140° 10.7′ W

A dry, quiet north-coast bay below the Pua valley, once heavily populated, now a family-run copra and cattle property with paepae and parts of the royal road visible among lime groves and coconut palms.

Practical

Chugach (Apr 2019) at 08°47.25'S / 140°10.73'W in 12 m sand, nice coral on the west side; dinghy landing difficult, they swam ashore. Jacaranda (Oct 2015) at 08°47.30'S / 140°10.70'W in 30 ft sand, excellent holding; some roll with a 1.5 m confused cross swell, so a stern anchor helps when the wind dies at night. Warmer and drier than Anaho; few no-nos. Only about five houses in the valley, run by Germain's family (2015). Bay Moutee, just west, was surveyed but not anchored. Sea-Seek (2024) gives the bay at 8°47.27'S 140°10.72'W: well sheltered from E swell, anchor about 200 m off the beach in 5 m; ashore are an old farm, ruined buildings and many fruit trees (breadfruit, lime, pomelo). The easiest landing is on the right by the mouth of a small river.
