Haapapani and Hakaea Beaches
8° 48.6′ S · 140° 9.0′ W
Two empty white-sand beaches on Nuku Hiva's north coast, reachable only by boat or on foot, that the official brief singles out as ideal for a change of scenery.
Practical
Coordinate is the OpenStreetMap beach polygon at the head of Haapapani; the Hakaea beach is just west at -8.80784, -140.16002. The brief (2023): treat these state-land beaches with the greatest respect; residents may be camping, and guided treks bivouac here. Land only in calm conditions. No-nos: repellent. Take all rubbish back to Taiohae.
Best for
A beach day with no one else around
Season
Calm, south-swell periods
