Fishing· Mangareva· French Polynesia: Tuamotus, Marquesas, Gambier & Australs
Gambier Ciguatera Warning (no lagoon fish)
23° 7.8′ S · 134° 57.0′ W · approximate
The Gambier has the worst ciguatera in French Polynesia: even fish locals usually consider safe can be highly toxic, and the neurotoxin cannot be cooked out.
Practical
approx: the pin is the central lagoon and the entry applies archipelago-wide. The safest rule is not to eat any fish caught in or near the lagoon. Herve on Taravai and Edouard on Taravai's south bay can show which fish locals eat, but what is safe for a local is not necessarily safe for a visitor. Visions of Johanna caught a tuna trolling outside the western reef when leaving. Symptoms range from nausea and tingling to cramps and, rarely, death.
