Anaho Beach (Nuku Hiva)

8° 49.7′ S · 140° 3.7′ W

The long white-sand beach at the head of Anaho Bay, behind the only real fringing reef on Nuku Hiva, with coconut palms, a spring-water shower and calm swimming; Marquesans come here on holiday.

Practical

Coordinate is the OpenStreetMap beach polygon centre on the south shore of Anaho Bay. Land by the buoyed dinghy channel through the reef (easier at low tide). Fresh spring water at the beach standpipe near the public toilet/shower building (ask about quality first; 2023). No-nos on the beach, worse to the east: repellent essential. Kaniho pension restaurant is by the beach (reservation required). Snorkelling is best in the SW corner; watch for stonefish in the shallows. Don't eat reef fish (ciguatera).

Best for

Swimming, beach walks and the start of the Haatuatua and Hatiheu walks
