Anaho SE Cove Snorkel

8° 49.6′ S · 140° 3.4′ W

The small cove in the SE corner of Anaho Bay, with less coral and less fetch than the main anchorage, makes an easy swim from the boat over sand and reef edges, with mantas often cruising the bay.

Practical

Coordinate is Kokpeli's 2018 anchoring position in the SE cove (08°49.6'S 140°03.4'W, 30 ft), from the Soggy Paws compendium. Moon Rebel (Aug 2018) rated the SW corner snorkelling 'really good' and the SE 'OK', not worth a long dinghy ride unless you are anchored there. Water is clear by Marquesan standards; mantas are frequent and there are no sharks of concern, though jellyfish sometimes appear (Kandu, 2016). Wear booties or don't stand: stonefish live in the shallows here. Gusts accelerate over the saddle in this corner in E-SE squalls. Severe ciguatera: look, don't eat. Anchor only in sand and keep chain off coral (12 m minimum per the official brief).

Best for

A quiet swim straight off the boat in the SE corner
