Akamaru Anchorage (Gambier)

23° 10.0′ S · 134° 55.2′ W

A sand-and-bommie basin north of tiny Mekiro islet off Akamaru, with jade water, a manicured village of a few families and the church of Our Lady of Peace.

Practical

Coordinate from Pitufa (2015): the deeper basin about 0.5 nm N of Mekiro. The charts are of little use here and coral heads are numerous, so float the chain with fenders or pearl floats. Sugar Shack anchored in 1.6-2 m of pure sand at 23 deg 10.109'S 134 deg 55.264'W and 23 deg 10.145'S 134 deg 55.272'W (2020). Akamaru has a small mooring ball for local pangas only, so do not use it. Navionics shows a 'Pass for boats' at 23 deg 10.379'S 134 deg 54.558'W that is NOT a pass but solid reef. At high tide with big swell, waves crash over the reef into the shallows. Irie spent a sleepless rolly night here (2013). Land the dinghy at the concrete dock in the village. Leave by a weather-safe route before a front.
