Tobacco Caye

16° 53.9′ N · 88° 3.9′ W · approximate

A three-acre fishing-village caye right on the reef, home to about 20 people and five small lodges, where you anchor in the lee, eat at a waterfront bar and snorkel the reef from the beach.

Practical

Position approximate: west of the caye (Wikipedia position 16.89833, -88.06194). Anchor west of the island in 5-10 ft; lots of seagrass, but sand patches hold well even in 20-25 knots; the island itself gives little wind protection, the reef calms the sea; if weather deteriorates, the protected lagoon at Man O' War Caye is 2 miles away (Yacht Warriors). Moorings: check cable condition. Generators run only at night; a small shop for basics; Reef's End Lodge bar and restaurant serves visitors. Island Divers runs trips to the Lesleen-M, a 165 ft freighter sunk as an artificial reef, and Rosamond's Trench. The Moorings' skippered route enters through Tobacco Cut. Popular with locals on weekends. About 10 miles east of Dangriga (Wikipedia).
