South Water Caye Anchorage

16° 49.0′ N · 88° 5.2′ W · approximate

Anchor off the west side of a palm-shaded caye perched right on the barrier reef, where the drop-off is a short swim from the beach and three small resorts welcome yacht crews for dinner.

Practical

Position approximate: about 450 m west of South Water Caye's OpenStreetMap outline. Depths usually around 10 ft; bottom mostly grass, so hunt for sand; good in east winds, rolly otherwise; mooring balls have failed in heavy winds - set your own anchor or check the pennant (Yacht Warriors). The Moorings eGuide: free anchoring on the west side; protection only good from easterlies. The caye sits on the north side of the quarter-mile-wide South Water Pass. Ashore: Blue Marlin Beach Resort (welcomes charter crews, fills dive tanks; book dinner), Pelican Beach Resort (south end) and the IZE marine study centre. Water, ice, restaurants and Wi-Fi available (Moorings itinerary). For a blow, move to Twin Cays.
