Carrie Bow Caye (Smithsonian Field Station)

16° 48.2′ N · 88° 4.9′ W

A speck of an island 0.7 nm south of South Water Caye that hosts the Smithsonian Institution's Carrie Bow Cay field station, where scientists study the surrounding reefs and marine ecosystems; wall dives just south of the caye are excellent.

Practical

It is a working research facility, so visit only by prior arrangement - do not land uninvited. Named for the Bowman family who owned it. Treat as a day stop: rolly, no overnight facilities (Yacht Warriors). The Moorings lists a visit to the Carrie Bow research station as a South Water Caye activity.

Best for

Wall diving and a look at a working reef lab
