Spooky Channel (Roatán)

16° 20.4′ N · 86° 33.9′ W

A dark, atmospheric north-shore site where a sand-and-coral bowl at about 50 ft feeds channels and swim-throughs under overhangs that almost close overhead — light filters in eerily, hence the name.

Practical

Coordinate from PADI's site page; Wikivoyage's Diving in Honduras list gives the same spot (16.33943, -86.56448). PADI: two buoys, one inside at 30 ft and one at the reef edge at 20 ft; central bowl at 50 ft; bring a torch — it is dark in places. Look for large-eyed toadfish and spotted scorpionfish in the cracks. North-shore site between Sandy Bay and West End inside the Roatán Marine Park: dive with a local operator, and do not tie a yacht to dive buoys. Calm in the usual east-to-south-east trades; rough in northers.
