Roatán Port of Entry (Coxen Hole)

16° 19.3′ N · 86° 32.3′ W · approximate

Coxen Hole (Roatán Town) is the Bay Islands' main port of entry, where the Port Captain and Immigration clear yachts arriving in Honduras. Most cruisers anchor in French Cay Harbour or take a West End mooring and ride a taxi or bus over.

Practical

Coordinate is the Coxen Hole town centre from OpenStreetMap, not the office door. Anchoring off Coxen Hole is not recommended: Noonsite reports an April 2023 armed boarding of the only yacht anchored there. Honduras requires a Notice of Arrival at least 48 hours before arrival (online form via Noonsite's clearance section; in mid-2026 a cruiser found the form briefly offline). A May 2024 cruiser reported clearing in at Coxen Hole free of charge: Immigration kept a copy of the last-port zarpe, granted 90 days on request, and the Port Captain issued a cruising permit matching the visa. Copy requirements vary by port. A 2016 cruiser reported an immigration officer demanding a bribe for more than 12 days; using an agent or a marina contact is suggested. One cruising permit covers all the Bay Islands. Hospital: Woods Medical Center (private) was described in old cruiser notes as almost across from immigration — verify locally. Eldon's and Plaza Mar supermarkets are in Coxen Hole.
