Port Royal & Fort Charles
17° 56.3′ N · 76° 50.5′ W
The 'wickedest city in the world' of the 1600s, two-thirds of it swallowed by the earthquake of June 7, 1692; the archaeological ensemble of 17th-century Port Royal was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2025. Fort Charles and the tilted Giddy House survive.
Practical
Wikipedia coordinates (17 56 15N, 076 50 28W). Fort Charles has a small museum; the Giddy House, an artillery store tilted by the January 14, 1907 earthquake, can be walked through. Gloria's seafood restaurant is the Port Royal fish-dinner institution (Virgintino 2015). Anchor off or dock at Morgan's Harbour. Port Royal is at the end of the Palisadoes spit near Norman Manley airport.
