Paya Bay Beaches (Roatán east end)

16° 25.7′ N · 86° 18.7′ W · approximate

Two half-moon beaches below a clifftop restaurant on Roatán's wild east end, with the barrier reef breaking about 100 yards offshore and snorkelling straight from shore at Secret Cove.

Approximate coordinate: OpenStreetMap's 'Big Beach' at Alligator Nose, which matches the resort's own description of its large 'Big Beach' and an alligator-head rock formation. We found no published yacht anchorage off Paya Bay. The reef is close inshore, so visit by road from the Oak Ridge or Calabash Bight anchorages: the resort's entrance is about 6 km along the unpaved East End road after the Oak Ridge turnoff. Paya Bay Resort's day-visitor package is US$95 per adult (US$65 for under-12s, US$85 for over-64s), capped at 30 visitors a day, and includes a seafood lunch, both beaches and snorkelling. Clothing is optional in parts of the property (naturist zones). Shore snorkelling is at Secret Cove (with a ladder); snorkel boats leave at 10:00 am and 2:30 pm. The resort also runs a boat tour through the Helene mangrove canal to the Port Royal cays.
