Laguna Encantada Bioluminescence (Isla Grande)
10° 10.7′ N · 75° 43.7′ W
After dark the mangrove-ringed Enchanted Lagoon on Isla Grande glows: stir the water and bioluminescent plankton light up around your hands and fins.
Practical
OSM position for the Laguna Encantada (see also the daytime kayak entry). Tom Plan My Trip (updated May 2026): go after sunset; best on the darkest nights around the new moon; bring a mask, snorkel and white T-shirt - moving the water makes the glow stronger. The Barú guide warns the plankton glows only faintly when agitated - far less dramatic than online photos - so manage expectations. Diving Planet also runs night dives with bioluminescence for overnight guests in the Rosarios. Getting there from a yacht: anchor off the north shore (Mantas, Cocotera, Alcatraz or Majagua) and walk the unmarked trails to the lagoon with an offline map, or ask an island hostel to guide you; there are no ATMs and only Movistar has signal. Don't use sunscreen or repellent in the lagoon, don't touch or cut mangroves, and carry a red light for the walk back.
Best for
A new-moon night swim with glowing plankton
Season
Year-round; best around the new moon
