Lac Cai

12° 6.2′ N · 68° 13.3′ W · approximate

The quiet beach on the east side of Lac Bay, piled with tall mounds of old queen-conch shells, where Bonaireans gather on Sundays for fresh fish and live music.

Practical

Snack bar with food and drinks; little shade, so bring your own. Sundays are the social day with local food and often live music; weekdays are much quieter (bonaire.com). Shallow, calm water over seagrass and sand, with feeding sea turtles; there is current at the opening to the sea, so stay in the sheltered part of the bay; the dive site at the reef opening is for experienced divers only. Look at but do not take the conch shells - catching karkó has been banned since 1985. Dogs not allowed; kitesurfing prohibited in Lac. The last stretch of road is bumpy and partly unpaved; no public transport (bonaire.com). STINAPA nature fee required to swim or snorkel. Coordinate approx: OpenStreetMap 'Lac' locality node on the east side of the bay - the beach itself is not mapped; follow the road around Lac Bay to its end.
