Humpback whale season (Turks Island Passage)

Each winter humpback whales migrating to the Silver, Mouchoir and Gentry banks funnel through the 7,000-ft-deep Turks Island Passage, passing close to Grand Turk and Salt Cay.

Coordinate approximate: mid-passage west of Salt Cay. Whale trips run January–April (Visit TCI); Salt Cay Divers quote January–March and Noonsite late January–March for boats heading north. In-water snorkel encounters are sometimes possible with licensed operators. Keep a sharp watch and slow down when crossing the passage in season; give whales a wide berth.
