Fuerte San Fernando de Bocachica

10° 19.2′ N · 75° 34.9′ W

A horseshoe-shaped 1750s fortress at the southern tip of Tierra Bomba that, with the San José battery across the strait, caught enemy ships in crossfire at the Bocachica entrance - and you sail right between them coming in.

Practical

OSM position. Built 1753–1759 after English artillery destroyed the older San Luis castle in 1741 (Spanish Wikipedia). The national cruising guide: the two forts frame the 118 m mouth of the Bocachica channel. Reach it by water taxi from La Bodeguita or Bazurto (mornings), or by dinghy only in settled conditions - the channel carries ship traffic.
