El Golfete Anchorage
15° 43.7′ N · 88° 52.8′ W
El Golfete is the lake-like widening of the Río Dulce, about 16 km long and a few kilometres wide, with an island, a large natural anchorage and manatee-grazed seagrass beds.
Practical
Coordinate is the lake from Wikipedia; anchor where sheltered for the wind of the day, sounding in. Keep to the centre when crossing — deep except shoaling near the banks (OCC Rio Dulce port officer). Afternoon breezes can kick up a chop. Avoid anchoring near the Río Tatín mouth. Manatee sanctuary rules apply in the Chocón Machacas biotope on the north shore.
Best for
Open-water sailing and quiet anchoring mid-river
