Río Dulce Gorge
15° 48.0′ N · 88° 46.8′ W · approximate
Above Livingston the river winds for about 10 km through a jungle canyon whose walls rise roughly 90 m (300 ft), hung with lianas, orchids and bromeliads, with howler monkeys and toucans overhead — one of the great river passages in the Caribbean.
Practical
Position approximate (mid-gorge, derived from the river course between Livingston and Cayo Quemado). Depths 12-26 m near the centre or slightly to starboard going up-river, except one tight turn where a cruiser saw 2.3 m on the inside — the bend with stakes in the shallows to port (Spirit of Argo). Stay mid-channel and watch for cayucos and fast lanchas. Allow 3-4 hours from Livingston to Fronteras. The gorge is part of Río Dulce National Park (130 km²).
