El Bight Anchorage (Guanaja)

16° 27.0′ N · 85° 51.7′ W · approximate

Guanaja's most protected and popular anchorage, a mile from Bonacca on the main island's south coast — sand, great wind protection, and a scattering of cruiser-friendly restaurants ashore.

Practical

Anchor in about 20 ft over sand (Noonsite); older notes report clay and grass with good holding — the best place to be in a norther. Enter from town (watch for obstacles) or from inside the reefs through the channel between Dunbar Rock (the islet with a house built on it) to port and the marked reefs off the headland. Cruisers report C-Map and Navionics depths here as confusing or misleading although hazards plot accurately — eyeball navigation in good light. In calm weather anchor off the shore to escape no-see-ums. Ashore (2023 report): Hans' (pizza), Manati (Saturday cruiser social), Mi Casa II (lionfish) by dinghy. Thieves have been reported in the anchorage. Coordinate is approximate (derived from the OSM El Bight settlement and Dunbar Rock positions).
