Bonacca (Guanaja Cay)

16° 26.5′ N · 85° 53.2′ W

A tiny cay crammed with houses, shops and canals on stilts — no roads, no cars — where most of Guanaja's people live, the island's only real place to shop.

Practical

Coordinate from OpenStreetMap. Supermarkets (Casa Sikaffy was best-stocked per old notes), fresh produce when the mainland boat arrives (Fridays historically), bank, SIM cards, small bars and restaurants. Fuel, water, ice and propane: Wilmont Bay Service ('Alcatraz') on an islet just off Bonacca (open 7 days in older listings, verify). Older notes also mention a Texaco fuel dock on the north side with 14 ft alongside. Hurricane Mitch flattened most buildings in 1998 and a 2021 fire destroyed about 200 structures.
