Central Caribbean Marine Institute - Little Cayman Research Centre

19° 41.6′ N · 80° 3.6′ W · approximate

CCMI's reef research station on Little Cayman's north shore, less than half a mile east of Bloody Bay Marine Park. Its scientists monitor the reefs (since 1998) and ran the Cayman Islands' first coral nursery (2016), and visitors can tour the station every Friday.

Practical

Coordinate approximate: CCMI says the station has 1,400 ft of reef-protected beach on the north side, less than half a mile east of Bloody Bay Marine Park, so it is placed on the north shore south-east of the Jackson's Point DoE moorings. Verify on arrival. Research Station Tour every Friday at 3:00 pm: book online, through your hotel reception, by phone on (345) 948 1094 or by email to education@reefresearch.org (no price published). CCMI also runs public Reef Lectures, citizen-science programmes and courses. Ground was broken in 2005 (HRH The Earl of Wessex). The station has its own dive boats and compressor, but it is a research facility, not a dive shop or a fuel or water stop. Approach it by land from Blossom Village or the South Hole Sound anchorage, not by boat over the reef.
