Cartagena Old Walled City

10° 25.4′ N · 75° 33.0′ W

The UNESCO World Heritage walled city (inscribed 1984): ochre and indigo colonial houses with flower-draped wooden balconies inside the Spanish ramparts, entered through the clock-tower gate, the Puerta del Reloj.

Practical

OSM position for the Puerta del Reloj. From the Manga anchorage it is about a 15-minute walk via the Román bridge or a short taxi (Cruiser's Guide lists official fares like Manga–Centro COP 12,000, 15,000 at night; verify locally). Highlights: Plaza de Santo Domingo (Botero's 'Gertrudis'), Plaza de la Aduana (main tourist office, Casa del Marqués de Premio Real), Plaza de San Pedro Claver, Plaza de San Diego and Parque de Bolívar. Climb onto the walls at Santa Teresa or the Baluarte de Santo Domingo for sunset. Las Bóvedas, the old vaults in the north wall, are now craft shops (avoid cruise-ship days). Don't change money on the street and don't wear expensive jewelry; buy emeralds only after homework.

Best for

A walking day of colonial history, plazas and sunset on the walls
