Wildlife· North Andros· Bahamas — Eleuthera, Andros & the Out Islands
West Side National Park
24° 25.0′ N · 78° 11.0′ W · approximate
About 1.5 million acres of mangrove creeks, tidal flats and wetlands covering virtually the whole west side of Andros: a fish nursery, flamingo feeding ground and bonefish and tarpon country, reachable only by boat.
Practical
Position approximate: Wide Opening (Wikipedia list of Bahamas creeks), one of the west side's creek mouths, used as a representative point. BNT: established 2002 (185,000 acres) and expanded in 2012; no wardens, little infrastructure; traditional fishing grounds for sponges, scale fish, land crab and spiny lobster remain. Wildlife: West Indian flamingos, roseate spoonbills, smalltooth sawfish, sea turtles, Andros rock iguana. The west side is very shallow and poorly charted: explore by shallow-draft boat or kayak on a rising tide, with a guide. William's Island and Cross Cay are the only verified yacht anchorages on this coast in these sources.
