Rock Sound West Anchorage

24° 52.2′ N · 76° 11.3′ W

A large, quiet anchorage on the west side of Rock Sound, backed by beaches, that cruisers use for westerly blows and as the last stop before crossing to the Exumas.

Practical

Position from the ActiveCaptain marker. Approach from the south avoiding shoals near shore; Explorer charts show pockets of 8 to 11 ft and cruisers find more water than charted. Sand; one reviewer warns it is soft, so pull hard on the anchor before trusting it. Good protection south-west through north-west and north (held 25 kn gusting 30 kn, 2014), little current and no wakes; poor water clarity and uncomfortable in southerlies. Lobster pots in the area. It is about 1.5 miles across to the town landing.
