Rock Sound Settlement Anchorage (Rock Sound East)

24° 52.1′ N · 76° 9.9′ W

The big, shallow sound in front of Rock Sound settlement, South Eleuthera's provisioning town, where dozens of boats wait out fronts with groceries, fuel, water and restaurants a dinghy ride away.

Practical

Position from the ActiveCaptain 'Rock Sound East' marker. Charted 7 to 9 ft, tide range 2 to 3.5 ft (Waterway Guide). Silt and sand towards Frigate's give good holding in 7 to 8 ft MLW with proper scope (2019); some spots are hard, so back down firmly. Good protection from most directions; in a westerly move to Rock Sound West or North. Do not anchor near the government dock: the mail boat and supply vessels come in at night to unload. Land at the town dinghy dock (sturdy ladders both sides) or Frigate's dock. Free fresh-water tap across the street from the wooden dock south of the concrete one, by the conch bar (2019), and free water at Frigate's. About twenty boats sheltered here in a 20-plus kn blow in one cruiser's report (Adiona Adventures); a VHF morning net announces supply-boat arrivals. Bugs can be bad at night.
