Port Royal Beach Anchorage (Tail Winds Bay)

24° 39.4′ N · 75° 44.3′ W

An open, west-facing bay at the far north-west corner of Cat Island with gin-clear water over white sand, sometimes logged as Tail Winds Resort Bay. Coral bommies at its north-east corner and the reefs around Orange Creek Point make it one of the better snorkel stops on the north coast.

Practical

Cruisers report about 9 ft close to shore; the west side is open with deep water near the beach. Holds well in white sand in east to south-east winds, but it is open to swell from the north and west, so leave if a front is coming. One boat drawing 7 ft found room in 10 kt SE. Snorkel the big coral heads in the NE corner and the reef on the south side around Orange Creek Point. Tail Winds Resort ashore was reported closed in March 2022, and Shanna Cove Resort's restaurant (reached by a short trail from the beach) was reported in 2016-2018; check whether either is open before you count on a meal ashore. No services at the beach.

Best for

Snorkelling and a quiet beach night in settled east or south-east winds

Season

Nov–May in E–SE trade winds; untenable in N or W swell
