Matthew Town Anchorage
20° 57.4′ N · 73° 40.9′ W
The open roadstead off Matthew Town, Inagua's only town, where boats bound to or from the Windward Passage drop the hook to clear in or out, shop and wait for weather.
Practical
ActiveCaptain pin off the Government Basin; noforeignland reports about 18 ft on sand, Noonsite 3.5 m. Holding is variable - sand over hard coral in places - so dive the anchor. Protected only from the east and north-east and often rolly in the trades; in strong NE several boats move up to Man of War Bay. A 2012 Noonsite report held well twice here in 15-20 kt with 1-2 ft swell. Dinghy into the Government Basin and tie to the wooden dock, or land on the beach in front of the general store (Noonsite: the better beach landing). Batelco/BTC data good; open WiFi at the dock office. Water (2025 report): a spigot behind the pink building at the base of the shore-facing wall beside the trash bins - bring a hose fitting. Untenable in any westerly.
Best for
Clearing in or out on the Windward Passage route
Season
E–NE trades; leave for Man of War Bay in fresh NE
