Inagua General Store (Matthew Town)
20° 57.0′ N · 73° 40.6′ W · approximate
Matthew Town's main grocery, tied to the Morton Salt operation and restocked by the company's salt ship from Florida - the best place south of Long Island to fill the fridge before the Windward Passage.
Practical
Approximate coordinate on Gregory Street (the shore road) beside the Bank of The Bahamas; German Wikivoyage lists the store at Gregory Street (phone 339-1460, fax 339-1265 - the same fax as Morton's Main House; undated listing, verify locally), and a 2012 Noonsite report describes it as 'on the beach road'. The exact storefront is not published, so ask anyone near the harbour. Fresh produce arrives when Morton's salt boat returns from Florida (about every eight days in 2012) - shop right after the boat comes in for the best greens. ActiveCaptain (services note 2018) calls it 'one main grocery store (fair)' and says you can buy ice; a Feb 2025 review describes the grocery south of the government basin as 'well stocked with all essentials'. German Wikivoyage also lists a separate Morton Company Store on Gregory Street - it may be the same shop. Hours are not published; out-island stores typically close Sundays - verify locally. Cash only (US or Bahamian dollars).
