Long Island hurricane season and storm damage (Joaquin 2015, Melissa 2025)
23° 20.7′ N · 75° 7.5′ W · approximate
Long Island sits in the path of Atlantic hurricanes (June to November). Joaquin in 2015 and Melissa in 2025 both passed over the island, and their effects are still visible in docks and services.
Practical
Melissa made landfall on Long Island on October 29, 2025 as a Category 1 hurricane, its eye passing over the south of the island (Wikipedia). It flooded Deadman's Cay Airport and brought 'extreme flooding' to Alligator Bay, the Crossing and the Bight, stripped roofs and badly damaged the power station roof, cutting power and water for days (Nassau Guardian). For cruisers: Basil's dinghy dock in Thompson Bay was mostly destroyed (donations accepted at Long Island Petroleum), and noforeignland notes damaged dinghy access in Thompson Bay. Joaquin (October 2015) brought an 18-ft storm surge to Long Island, washed out southern roads and destroyed an estimated 75% of fishing boats; Stella Maris and other docks lost markers and facilities. Check current dock conditions on arrival. Position is Salt Pond.
