Jumentos fishing and spearfishing rules

22° 15.0′ N · 75° 45.2′ W · approximate

The Jumentos are the Bahamas' great spearfishing ground for cruisers, but Bahamian fisheries law applies everywhere and the Defence Force patrols here.

Practical

Coordinate approx: pinned at the Hog Cay anchorage as a chain-wide marker. A fishing permit is required on foreign yachts: $100 up to 50 ft, $300 over 50 ft, valid 30 days (bahamas.com). Rules as summarised by Walker's Cay (2026): Hawaiian sling is the only legal spear; no scuba or compressor to take any marine life; spiny lobster (crawfish) closed April 1 to July 31, max 10 tails aboard, minimum 3-3/8 in carapace or 6 in tail, no egg-bearing females; conch max 6 per vessel and only with a well-formed lip; demersal fish max 60 lb or 20 fish; migratory fish (wahoo, dolphin, kingfish, tuna) max 18 per vessel. Check current rules, including any Nassau grouper closed season, with the Department of Marine Resources before you go. Barracuda on the banks are a ciguatera risk. Pelagics off the deep windward sides of Water and Flamingo Cays are excellent (MV Privateer).
