Hog Cay Anchorage (Raggeds)

22° 15.0′ N · 75° 45.2′ W

Middle Pen Bay on Hog Cay is the social centre of the southern Bahamas' most remote cruising ground: excellent sand, easterly protection and a beach crowded with cruiser-built trails and the Hog Cay Yacht Club hut.

Practical

ActiveCaptain: avoid the shoals to the west and follow Explorer charts past Margaret Shoal; otherwise straightforward. About 9 ft, shoaling toward the beach; MV Privateer anchored in 10 ft in the second row with 6 ft near the beach. Excellent holding and protection NE through SE; some swell possible from the south; no protection from any wind with a west component (noforeignland: rolly in NE). Around 20 boats in February, over 40 in Presidents' week (MV Privateer); about 40 in 2022 (outchasingstars). Duncan Town is nearly 4 nm by dinghy (see the trench passage). Cell: Aliv LTE reported, BTC patchy. Bull sharks are around: do not clean fish at the boat. No services, water or trash.

Best for

The cruisers' hub of the Raggeds in east winds

Season

Dec–May; best Mar–May between fronts; leave or move to a front refuge before W–N winds
