Seasonal· Eleuthera· Bahamas — Eleuthera, Andros & the Out Islands
Hurricane season on Eleuthera (hurricane holes: Hatchet Bay, Cape Eleuthera)
25° 20.9′ N · 76° 29.3′ W
Atlantic hurricane season brings the threat of storm surge to Eleuthera's low shores; Hatchet Bay's enclosed pond and Cape Eleuthera's basin are the region's best shelters, but neither is a guaranteed hurricane hole.
Practical
Position is Hatchet Bay Harbour (ActiveCaptain). Season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking late August through September (Wikipedia). Hurricane Andrew (1992, Category 5) caused an 18 ft surge in coastal areas of Eleuthera (Wikipedia). Hatchet Bay is protected from every direction (enclosed except the narrow cut) but the bottom is grassy and the old moorings are unreliable; Cape Eleuthera Marina gets surge with south-west to north-west winds (ActiveCaptain). Check your insurer's named-storm terms and have a plan to leave the area or haul out before June.
