Hurricane season in the Jumentos and Raggeds
22° 11.4′ N · 75° 43.5′ W · approximate
From June to November the chain sits on a common hurricane track with no true hurricane hole, no haul-out and no services: Hurricane Irma's eye passed directly over Duncan Town on September 8, 2017 and emptied the island.
Practical
Pinned at Duncan Town (GeoNames). The NOAA National Hurricane Center season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking around September 10 with most activity mid-August to mid-October. Wikipedia: after Irma's direct hit the government evacuated the remaining residents, and in March 2019 restoration was still limited; cruisers still found the police station unrepaired in 2020 (MV Privateer). Between the Raggeds and Duncan Town harbour are the best-protected spots, but they are shallow, tide-limited and not storm-rated. There is no fuel, water, propane or repair anywhere in the chain. Cruisers use the chain from December to May; in hurricane season leave for a proper refuge or haul-out well before any named storm, and check your insurer's latitude limits.
