Hurricane Irma 2017 and Duncan Town recovery
22° 11.4′ N · 75° 43.5′ W
On September 8, 2017 the eye of Hurricane Irma passed directly over Duncan Town; officials declared the island uninhabitable and the remaining residents were airlifted out. The town has been slowly rebuilding ever since.
Practical
Pinned at the Duncan Town settlement (GeoNames). Wikipedia: restoration was still limited in March 2019; a solar farm with battery storage, meant to supply at least 90% of the island's power, was built from December 2019 and commissioned in February 2020. Population fell from 72 (2010 census) to 44 (2022). Cruisers in 2023 found a new school, community centre, town offices and a hospital/clinic under construction. Respect damaged private property and ask before photographing homes.
