Duncan Town
22° 11.4′ N · 75° 43.5′ W
The only settlement in the whole Jumentos and Ragged Island chain, a hilltop village of about 44 people (2022 census) built on 19th-century salt, rebuilt after Hurricane Irma, and famously warm to the cruisers who make it this far.
Practical
Position: GeoNames (settlement). Provisions are very limited: Maxine's general store is up the hill from the dock, on the right behind the new hospital/clinic building (2023); call ahead or ask locals when the supply boat is due (about three times a month, 2023). A blue building with a big porch serves cheap Kaliks and snacks in air conditioning. No fuel, water, propane or repairs anywhere in the chain (MV Privateer, 2023); arrive self-sufficient. The only cell/internet in the chain is from the Duncan Town tower. No BTC store. Solar farm, new school, community centre and town offices were new or nearly complete in 2023, and a dinghy dock was rumoured. Get to town by dinghy up the trench from Hog Cay or the west side, or walk from the Southside anchorage. Not a port of entry: clear in at George Town, Long Island or elsewhere first. Carry cash.
