Dean's Blue Hole

23° 6.4′ N · 75° 0.5′ W

A 663-ft (202 m) blue hole in a sheltered bay west of Clarence Town, ringed by cliffs and white sand, where the turquoise shallows drop off into a dark blue circle. It is the home of world freediving records and an unforgettable snorkel.

Practical

Signed off the Queen's Highway; the last stretch is a rough dirt road. The hole is about 30 m across, widening to about 100 m below (Wikipedia). Snorkel the edge: sergeant majors on the ledges, turtles in the shallows beyond. Wikivoyage warns of deaths over the years from untrained freediving; overhangs exist at the surface under the cliffs and about 60 ft down, so surface with a hand overhead, and non-swimmers must stay out of the sand shallows because the drop-off is sudden. Vertical Blue runs freediving courses and training here (no swell, no current). No facilities. Visit by car from Clarence Town or Thompson Bay.
