Conception Island reefs

23° 51.3′ N · 75° 7.3′ W · approximate

Unusually healthy reefs ring the island: patch reefs at the mouth of West Bay and, per the Bahamas tourism board, a protected cove with groves of staghorn coral you can swim through just below the surface.

Practical

Southern Boating notes several small reefs protecting the West Bay entrance and isolated heads inside, with extensive reef systems extending north, east and south for miles; the point is an OSM-mapped reef patch at the mouth of West Bay. BNT warns there is no shelter nearby and swell can become large - snorkel in calm conditions and keep a dinghy watch. Strictly no-take. Visibility routinely exceeds 100 ft on the outer wall (Sail Abacos).

Best for

Snorkelling straight from the dinghy in calm weather
