Albert Town (Long Cay)

22° 35.9′ N · 74° 20.6′ W

The near-ghost town of Long Cay, once a busy port of the sponge and salt trades where Hamburg-America and Pacific Mail steamers picked up Bahamian stevedores and labourers bound for Central America before the First World War. Today a few hardy residents (29 in the 2010 census) live among the ruins below Fortune Hill.

Practical

Position is the Albert Town node in OpenStreetMap. Land by dinghy at the Long Cay Dock (OpenStreetMap pier at 22.5903, -74.3350) from the Fortune Island West anchorage. No shops or services; bring water. Columbus is believed to have reached Long Cay on 19 October 1492 and named it Isabela. Great Salt Pond lies in the middle of the island. A passenger boat runs from Church Grove Landing on Crooked Island on Wednesdays and Saturdays (Wikivoyage; verify locally). Be respectful: houses that look abandoned may still be owned.
