Taino Basin Anchorage (inside Bell Channel, Lucaya)

26° 31.1′ N · 78° 37.9′ W

A small canal basin behind the Lucaya marinas, the one spot inside Bell Channel where crews needing rest have usually been tolerated at anchor. It puts you a dinghy ride from Port Lucaya's restaurants, dive shop and Count Basie Square.

Practical

Position is the Waterway Guide anchorage listing (N 26 31.054 / W 078 37.861). Depth 6 to 8 ft; tidal range 2 to 2.5 ft; good holding in sand; all-round wind protection; no current. Located down the second canal past the Grand Bahama Yacht Club docks (Waterway Guide). RULES: Waterway Guide says that technically anchoring is not permitted anywhere inside Bell Channel; boats in the small Taino basin have usually been left alone, but be prepared to move if challenged by the local police, and do not anchor within sight of the marinas or you will definitely be asked to leave. Treat it as a short rest stop, not a base. Dinghy to Port Lucaya for shore access (Port Lucaya Marina itself was listed as temporarily closed; land at Grand Bahama Yacht Club by arrangement). Pets: climb the seawall on the south side of the basin. Clear customs first at Grand Bahama Yacht Club. Enter via Bell Channel (see the passage entry).

Best for

An overnight rest close to Port Lucaya when the marinas are full or closed

Season

Year-round; tolerated, not permitted, so short stays only
