SS Sapona Wreck
25° 39.0′ N · 79° 17.6′ W
A 1919 concrete steamship that a 1926 hurricane drove aground south of South Bimini after rum runners had used her as a floating liquor warehouse; later a WWII bombing target, her shattered hull stands half out of 15 ft of water, alive with fish.
Practical
Position from Wikipedia (ActiveCaptain's day anchorage is at 25.65028, -79.29388). Approach from the west between Turtle and Triangle Rocks in 15-18 ft all the way to the wreck; do not approach from the north, which is shallow (ActiveCaptain). Anchor on the west side in sand; the further from the wreck, the easier the anchor bites. Day stop only. Swim to the outside of the stern for the biggest schools of fish (2022 review). Most of the hull's concrete has eroded, so do not climb on it. Neal Watson's Reef Shark Safari pairs Triangle Rocks reef sharks (Caribbean reef and blacknose) with the Sapona, year-round, $160 dive or $120 snorkel plus VAT (2026).
