Junkanoo on Grand Bahama (Boxing Day, New Year's and Summer Festival)
26° 31.2′ N · 78° 37.3′ W · approximate
Junkanoo is the Bahamas' great street parade of costumes, goatskin drums, cowbells and horns, starting in the small hours after midnight on Boxing Day (26 December) and New Year's Day. On Grand Bahama, Taino Beach park also hosts the Junkanoo Summer Festival.
Practical
Position is Taino Beach park (OpenStreetMap), the documented venue for the Junkanoo Summer Festival (Ministry of Tourism); the Boxing Day and New Year's parades run in Freeport, and Bahamians on every island hold their own celebrations, so ask locally for the Freeport route and times. The biggest parade is on Bay Street, Nassau. Visitors can arrange to join a group through their hotel. Expect road closures and booked-up taxis on parade nights.
Best for
Bahamian culture at full volume
Season
26 December and 1 January (pre-dawn); Summer Festival in summer
