Ben's Cave and Burial Mound Cave
26° 36.3′ N · 78° 24.1′ W
Two sinkholes in Lucayan National Park with stairs down to viewing platforms over crystal water: Ben's Cave holds 60 ft of water, freshwater on top of saltwater with a shimmering halocline, and Burial Mound Cave held Lucayan skeletons found in 1986.
Practical
Position is Ben's Cave (OpenStreetMap); Burial Mound Cave is about 100 yards northwest (26.6061 N / 78.4023 W). Both are reached on the park boardwalk; park fees and weekend hours apply. Ben's Cave is named for UNEXSO diver Ben Rose and is home to remipedes, blind cave crustaceans first described here. Migratory bats use the caves as summer nurseries, so keep voices down. No swimming; diving only with an authorised instructor arranged in advance (Ministry of Tourism).
