Peterson Cay National Park

26° 33.1′ N · 78° 31.4′ W

A 1.5-acre sand-and-palm cay about a mile off the south shore, the only cay on Grand Bahama's leeward side, ringed by shallow reef with elkhorn and brain coral. Since 2015 the park covers about 1,000 acres of surrounding sea, and the cay holds a globally significant bridled tern colony.

Practical

Position from OpenStreetMap (islet and BNT park boundary). Bahamas National Trust rules date from 1967: no removal of plants and no fishing or extractive activity within about a quarter mile of the cay. No infrastructure, no warden, no trails, no facilities: carry out all trash. A coral nursery run with the Freeport Harbour Company lies southwest of the cay, so keep anchors well clear. Depths around the cay are mostly 5-20 ft (SailAbacos). Keep off the cay when terns are nesting (summer).

Best for

A protected-reef snorkel and an uninhabited cay to land on
