Top Gallant Basin Anchorage (Grand Lucayan Waterway)

26° 33.0′ N · 78° 33.7′ W

A small, bulkheaded man-made basin just inside the south end of the Grand Lucayan Waterway, dug for canal homes that were never built after the development failed in the early 1980s. Not pretty, but Waterway Guide rates it protected from all directions with excellent sand holding: the best storm hidey-hole on the Lucaya side of the island.

Practical

Position is the Waterway Guide anchorage listing (N 26 32.983 / W 078 33.720). Depth 5 to 8 ft; tidal range 2 to 2.5 ft; good holding in sand; no current in the basin; all-round wind protection; room for only 2 to 3 boats (Waterway Guide). Concrete bulkhead all the way around, so the view is limited; bugs can be fierce in light winds, though a June 2025 reviewer (55 ft power, 5 ft draft) reported none and said the sand held well in 5 to 8 knots. Approach via the Grand Lucayan Waterway south entrance: marinas.com gives an approach waypoint of 26 31.927 N / 78 33.214 W, a flashing light about 1 mile SW of the jetties, then about 1 mile on 345 degrees true to the stone jetties, with 9 to 13 ft on the approach and 8 to 10 ft in the waterway; currents in the waterway can run 4 to 6 knots, so time the entrance with the tide. Shore access: Waterway Guide says you may be able to land at the sailing club at the end of the canal (exit the basin and turn right); see Sir Charles Hayward Yacht Club. Pets: climb the seawall. Cell coverage good. No services in the basin; fuel and provisions in Lucaya (Grand Bahama Yacht Club fuel dock, Solomon's Lucaya). Confirm no local anchoring restriction applies before staying long.
