Abaco National Park

25° 58.0′ N · 77° 12.2′ W

20,500 acres of Caribbean pine forest and coppice in South Abaco, created in 1994 to protect the breeding grounds of the endangered Abaco (Bahama) parrot - and home to the Bahama swallow, Bahama yellowthroat, olive-capped warbler and West Indian woodpecker.

Practical

Bahamas National Trust park; land access by road from Marsh Harbour, Schooner Bay or Sandy Point. Admission fees and bylaws are set by BNT - check bnt.bs before going. Parrot numbers rose from about 1,500 (1994) to about 8,900 after predator control began in 2009 (BNT), though a 2025 survey found only about 13 active nests, blamed on overgrown understory from too few low-intensity fires. Bring water, sun and insect protection; no services. Coordinate is the park centroid (Wikipedia / Protected Planet).
