Abaco Parrot Viewing
25° 58.8′ N · 77° 12.0′ W · approximate
The Abaco population of the Bahama (Cuban) amazon is the only parrot in the world known to nest underground, in limestone solution holes that shelter it from pine-forest fires - hear and see noisy flocks flying over the South Abaco pine yards.
Practical
Coordinate is approximate: a point in the South Abaco pine forest inside Abaco National Park; flocks range widely, also into settlements to feed. Breeding season March-September - never approach or disturb ground nests. Early morning is best. Population on Abaco estimated at about 3,550 birds in 2006 (Wikipedia). Consider a local birding guide; Friends of the Environment (Marsh Harbour) runs parrot research.
